AP 3 – Week of September 8, 2014

9/8 Monday – Rhetorical terms test today (this one is for real!). First Vocabulary Monday of the year. List #1: The Top Twenty Words of the SAT: aesthetic, conventional, mitigate, pragmatic, altruistic, diffident, frank, revere, subtle, reticent, antithetical, prescient, nostalgia, beguile, ominous, succinct, discerning, belie, anomaly, peremptory.

After the test, you are to copy the above twenty words (one per note card). On one side is the word, on the flip side is the definition and a sentence. I will check your cards tomorrow at the start of class.

9/9 Tuesday – Today is day one of the OUSD Process Writing Test (PWT). We will discuss the prompt and you will read, annotate and make notes for each of the six articles that you are to read for the synthesis essay. If you are confident, you may start the essay.

9/10 Wednesday (minimum day) – Day two of the PWT. You will be starting your essay if you haven’t yet done, or continuing from where you left off yesterday.

9/11 Thursday – Day three of the PWT. Your essays are due at the end of class. Tomorrow you will discuss, edit and comment on the essays in groups of four.

9/12 Friday – Peer Editing Protocal – follow instructions above.

HW: 1) Reread your essay and the comments from your peers. Write a reflection on the strengths and weaknesses of your essay’s argument, based on the feedback from your peers as well as your own insights. Explain how you will use this feedback to improve in your next essay.

2) Choose the paragraph in your essay that you think is the weakest in terms of its quality of argument and rewrite it. This is your opportunity to demonstrate how you can use feedback to revise and improve the quality of your writing.

3) Staple both writing assignments to the essay and comments sheets. All will be turned in together on Monday, 9/15/14.
