“I took along my son, who had never had any fresh water up his nose …” (444) | White’s choice of words here caught my interest because this is a stylish and original way of expressing his son’s inexperience around a lake | This is kind of curious because no one likes to have water up his/her nose. It is a very unpleasant, irritating sensation. However, there is also something reaffirming about life and nature that White wants his son to experience – swimming in a lake is one of life’s more joyful pastimes, yet there is also a sense of discomfort as well. I find it interesting that White chooses to describe lake swimming with this image. |
