East of Eden Essay Assignment

I have given this a lot of thought and based on your presentations, discussions and work on the study questions, I am leaving the topic up to you. That is, I would like you to develop a thesis that could be based on a character(s), theme, idea, theory, question for which you will write an in depth analysis. I recommend that if you run into difficulties choosing your topic, that you refer to your study questions – you can tailor or combine them as you wish.

Most importantly, keep in mind that you are analyzing a specific facet of East of Eden, not the entire novel. Here are some requirements:

* A title (not East of Eden or East of Eden essay, but something original.

Thesis statement.

Topic sentences for each paragraph.

Specific examples and/or quotations, (with page citations) that support your argument.

Writing that is in the present tense.

The universal pronoun “one” instead of “you”.

Clear, specific and engaging writing that is lively with original insights.

Double-spaced with 12 point Times New Roman font.

Due Dates: Monday, March 3:  Thesis and the beginnings of a rough draft that you will work on in class. (5 points)

Wednesday, March 5: Finished or nearly finished rough draft. (10 points)

Monday, March 10: Second rough draft (10 points)

Wednesday, March 12: Final draft (40 points)
